Major White had a problem: Colonel Sawyer had decided things were too boring in Washington so he had opted to pay him a visit in Maine.

As in his office.

As in right now.

“You’ve been withholding important information,” Sawyer accused him not two minutes into their conversation. “You caught one of them on camera around here not two days ago.”

“The thermal cameras are not conclusive, Sir. The three degrees’ Celsius difference with our temperature can have many explanations.”

“You have a suspect, Major. And I want him now.”

“We’ve only spotted him once, Colonel. There’s not much to tell.”

“Don’t be a disgrace to the Military Intelligence Unit.” Tension hung between them, and Sawyer smirked. “I know you, White. You wouldn’t be in this position if the High Command didn’t trust you, especially if you didn’t have the brains for this operation. What do you have on this visitor of yours?”

“As I said, nothing conclusive, sir.” White opened a drawer, reluctantly giving the file to Sawyer. Like Dr. Higgs’s comment on Ray’s understanding of The Little Mermaid, certain details were better kept in the dark until they made sense.

White had spent the better part of the last two days piecing together who’d been sitting on that bench on Sunday morning. The teenager who’d looked at the camera was Scott Hunter, a thirteen-year-old runaway foster kid from Miami, Florida.

“A teenage boy?” Sawyer asked a moment later.

The picture on the Child Protective Services’ file showed a hardened teenager. Scott had already been to eleven different foster homes in the last four years, meaning he’d been nine when he’d first entered the system. Nothing about his biological parents was on the record, nothing beyond Scott’s stubbornness to remain silent about his original family.

“I told you, he’s not a credible suspect, sir.”

“Hmm…” Sawyer grunted, reading the file.

The last time Scott had popped up in the system had been three months ago, and then nothing after that as if the earth had swallowed him whole.

Or maybe the ocean did.

So, here was an interesting question: why would a thirteen-year-old merman be left alone in the world?

“Why would he have been here two days ago if he wasn’t spying on us?” Sawyer asked, closing the file.

Maybe they’re family, White silently answered. He could picture this kid watching random videos on the net until he found the merman one, or maybe he even caught the news in some dark corner of the world. White could straight up ask Ray and be over with the question, but if that was his brother, it could be a disaster of misunderstood motivations.

If Scott was really a merman, how their first meeting went was vital to their future relationship.

“He hasn’t shown up on the thermal scanners again, so we don’t have a comparison thermal shot,” White answered, evading the question. “I’ve been waiting for him to come again, establish a pattern. But the truth is he’s just a kid, Colonel.”

“Is he? The truth here, Major, is that we don’t know how well these people can hide themselves.
